Adamu Abubakar, son of former Nigerian Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Chanchaga Federal Constituency seat in Niger State following a landslide victory in the party’s House of Representatives primary election held on Saturday.
The APC primary, conducted across the 11 wards of the constituency, saw Adamu Abubakar secure 30,650 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Nmaa Ahmed, who polled 1,271 votes. Another aspirant, Shuaibu Mairago, garnered 311 votes in the exercise.
The Returning Officer for the election, Dan Islam, officially declared Abubakar winner of the contest and returned him as the APC flagbearer for the forthcoming House of Representatives election in the constituency.
The development has generated reactions across political circles and social media, with many observers describing the victory as a major political boost for the former military leader’s family in Niger State politics. Several APC supporters and political commentators also highlighted the wide margin recorded in the primary as a sign of strong grassroots support within Chanchaga Federal Constituency.
The APC primaries in Niger State also produced winners in other federal constituencies. In Lapai Federal Constituency, Abdullahi Mahmud reportedly won the party’s ticket with 8,559 votes, while Prof. Yakubu Auna emerged victorious in the Magama/Rijau Federal Constituency primary.
Adamu Abubakar’s emergence adds to the growing list of influential political families seeking elective offices ahead of the next general elections, as parties across the country continue their internal selection processes.
