Aisha Yesufu Bows Out of FCT Senate Race Weeks After Declaring Ambition

 By Kehinde Awosina

Prominent activist and political advocate Aisha Yesufu has withdrawn from the race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), weeks after announcing her intention to contest.

Yesufu, a well-known supporter of Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, had on May 6 declared her interest in representing the FCT in the Senate during the 2027 general elections. Her decision came shortly after she joined the NDC following her exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The activist’s initial declaration generated considerable attention among supporters and political observers, many of whom viewed her entry into the race as a continuation of her long-standing involvement in civic engagement and governance advocacy.

Although details surrounding her decision to step down have yet to be fully disclosed, her withdrawal marks a significant development within the NDC ahead of preparations for the 2027 elections.

Yesufu has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most outspoken activists, gaining national prominence through her participation in the Bring Back Our Girls campaign and her advocacy for transparency, accountability, and electoral reforms.

Her decision to exit the contest is expected to spark discussions among her supporters and within political circles, particularly given her influence among young voters and members of the Obidient movement.

Political analysts say the development could reshape the emerging dynamics of the FCT senatorial contest as parties and aspirants begin positioning themselves for the next election cycle.
