Amaechi Counters Tinubu, Claims He Played Key Role in Buhari’s 2015 Victory

Former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stirred political debate after declaring that he — and not President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — played the decisive role in making late former President Muhammadu Buhari emerge victorious in the 2015 presidential election.

Amaechi made the remarks during a television interview while reacting to Tinubu’s long-standing claim that he was instrumental to Buhari’s rise to power through the coalition that formed the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Amaechi, he remained silent for years because he served in Buhari’s cabinet and did not want to publicly challenge the narrative at the time. However, he now insists that he led the political battles that secured Buhari’s victory in the historic 2015 election.

The former minister said he was deeply involved in the opposition merger process and also served as Director-General of Buhari’s presidential campaign, arguing that several political actors contributed to the APC’s success rather than one individual taking sole credit.

Amaechi’s comments are already generating reactions across social media and political circles, especially as conversations surrounding the 2027 presidential race continue to gather momentum. The former APC chieftain, who is now associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has recently been vocal in criticizing the current administration and positioning himself within the emerging opposition coalition.

Tinubu had repeatedly maintained, particularly during the buildup to the 2023 election, that without his political structure and influence, Buhari would not have become president in 2015. Amaechi’s latest remarks now reopen debates over who truly powered the APC’s historic victory over then-President Goodluck Jonathan.
