Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election, defeating former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatudeen in a keenly contested party primary.

The results of the election released by the party showed that Atiku secured a total of 1,855,787 votes to emerge victorious, while Amaechi polled 509,397 votes and Hayatudeen garnered 180,903 votes.

A total of 2,546,457 votes were cast during the exercise out of the party’s total membership strength of 3,113,599 eligible members who participated in the process.

Atiku’s victory officially positions him as the standard bearer of the ADC for the next presidential election, where he is expected to face incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in what political observers describe as a major showdown ahead of 2027.

Speaking before the party presidential primary, Atiku reportedly reaffirmed his  position that the upcoming contest would be his final attempt at the presidency, describing the race as a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy and future.

Party faithful and supporters erupted in celebration following the declaration, with many expressing confidence in Atiku’s experience and political network to challenge the ruling administration in the forthcoming election cycle.

The emergence of Atiku has also intensified political conversations across the country, as opposition parties continue consultations and realignments ahead of the next general elections.
