Court Clears Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Race, Dismisses Suit Against Ex-President

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has reportedly ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing a suit that sought to stop him from returning to the ballot.

The judgment, which has generated widespread reactions across social media, reportedly reaffirmed Jonathan’s constitutional right to seek another term in office despite arguments that he had already completed the maximum tenure allowed under the law.

According to reports, the court struck out the case filed against the former president and upheld earlier legal interpretations from courts in Yenagoa and the Court of Appeal which maintained that Jonathan could still lawfully contest for the presidency. The court was also said to have imposed a ₦20 million fine on the plaintiff.

The suit had asked the court to determine whether Jonathan, who completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning the 2011 presidential election, could constitutionally seek office again in 2027.

During previous proceedings, lawyers representing Jonathan and the Attorney-General of the Federation urged the court to dismiss the suit, arguing that the former president was not barred by the Constitution from contesting another election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission, was also listed in the matter and was reportedly present during the judgment.

The ruling is expected to intensify political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially amid growing speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to active politics. The former president has yet to officially declare interest in the race.
