‘Court Verdict on INEC Guidelines a Vindication of Our Position’ — ADC

The African Democratic Congress has welcomed a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja concerning the Independent National Electoral Commission’s regulations on party primaries and membership deadlines ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the judgement as a validation of its earlier opposition to aspects of the electoral guidelines introduced by Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to the ADC, it had strongly objected to the timelines imposed on membership registration and the scheduling of party primaries, arguing that some provisions contradicted constitutional rights and democratic principles.

The party said the court’s decision had now affirmed its position on the matter.

“The decision of the court on these issues, including those that directly contradict the Constitution, is therefore a welcome vindication of our position,” the statement read.

The ADC further noted that the judgement removes restrictions that could hinder politicians from switching political parties ahead of elections, describing the ruling as a victory for freedom of association and democratic participation.

The opposition party also alleged that the controversial provisions were intended to discourage defections from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“We believed at the time that that particular restriction was designed to prevent people from leaving the ruling party, APC. Now that the court has ruled against it, we are sure that, in the coming days, we will witness a mass exodus from the ruling party,” the statement added.

The ruling is expected to shape political alignments and preparations among parties and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
