ECN DG Denies Arrest, Says He Only Honoured EFCC Invitation
By Kehinde Awosina
The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has dismissed reports alleging that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged ₦500 billion fraud.
Reports had emerged on Wednesday claiming that EFCC operatives arrested the ECN boss in Abuja in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering and financial misconduct involving the commission.
However, Abdullahi clarified that he was not arrested, stating that he only honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency as part of routine investigative procedures.
According to sources close to the Energy Commission boss, Dr. Abdullahi voluntarily appeared before the EFCC to respond to issues raised by investigators and later left after interactions with officials of the commission.
The clarification comes amid widespread reactions following media reports alleging that the EFCC was probing transactions linked to the commission amounting to about ₦500 billion. Several media platforms had earlier reported that the ECN chief was being questioned by the agency in Abuja.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had yet to release an official statement confirming an arrest or formal charges against the ECN Director-General.
Dr. Abdullahi, who was appointed Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2023, maintained that he remains fully available to cooperate with lawful investigations.
