EU Drops Hammer on Temu: €200m Fine Over Dangerous Baby Toys and Faulty Chargers

 By Kehinde Awosina

The European Union has imposed a hefty fine of €200 million on the fast-growing e-commerce platform Temu over allegations of selling unsafe and potentially dangerous products to consumers across its platform.

According to reports, the penalty follows investigations that linked the platform to the sale of hazardous items, including baby toys and faulty electronic chargers, which raised serious concerns about consumer safety and product compliance standards within the EU market.

Regulators in the bloc accused the company of failing to adequately prevent the circulation of substandard goods, despite strict safety rules governing products sold to European consumers. The case has intensified ongoing scrutiny of major online marketplaces operating in Europe.

The fine is one of the largest regulatory sanctions imposed on a digital retail platform in recent years, reflecting the EU’s tougher stance on enforcing product safety laws and holding online marketplaces accountable for third-party sellers.

Authorities say the decision is aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring that all goods sold within the European market meet required safety standards.
