FG Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Internal Security, Boosting Police Capacity

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security framework and enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force through sustained institutional support, strategic reforms, and improved funding mechanisms.


The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, made this known on Monday, May 25, 2026, during the inauguration of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) held at the Ministry headquarters in Abuja.


Gaidam described the inauguration as a major milestone in ongoing efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force in line with global best practices. He noted that the Nigeria Police Trust Fund was created as a strategic intervention platform to provide sustainable funding for police training, welfare, operational logistics, equipment procurement, and infrastructural development.


According to him, the Trust Fund continues to play a critical role in strengthening policing operations and improving the effectiveness of the Force in maintaining law and order across the country.


The Minister stressed that security remains the foundation of national development, adding that no meaningful economic growth, social stability, or democratic progress can be achieved without a safe and secure environment. He therefore called on stakeholders to continue supporting initiatives aimed at improving professionalism, efficiency, and operational capacity within the police system.


Charging the newly inaugurated Board, Gaidam urged members to discharge their duties with integrity, transparency, accountability, and patriotism, noting that Nigerians expect improved policing, enhanced response to security challenges, better welfare for personnel, and prudent management of public resources.


“The inauguration of this Board of Trustees is not merely ceremonial; it is a call to national service. Nigerians expect sound policy direction, institutional accountability, and measurable results in the management of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund,” he said.


He assured that the Ministry of Police Affairs will continue to provide policy guidance and oversight to ensure the effective delivery of the Fund’s mandate in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.


In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Anuma Ogbonnaya, said the evolving security environment demands innovative strategies, stronger collaboration, and sustained investment in policing institutions. He noted that the inauguration comes at a critical time as Nigeria intensifies reforms to improve the operational effectiveness of the Police Force.


Ogbonnaya expressed confidence in the capacity and leadership of the newly inaugurated Board to provide strategic direction for the Trust Fund, while reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to coordination, policy support, and institutional strengthening.


Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, appreciated the Minister, the Inspector-General of Police, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful inauguration. He described the development as another step toward enhancing police education, professionalism, leadership, and institutional growth.


The event was attended by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu; Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu; Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, AIG Patrick Adedeji Atayero; members of the Board of Trustees; representatives of security agencies; development partners; and other stakeholders.
