FIFA Reaffirms Okocha’s Historic World Cup Dribbling Record

World football governing body FIFA has once again recognised Nigerian football icon as the holder of the record for the most successful dribbles completed in a single FIFA World Cup match.


The acknowledgement comes as FIFA continues its countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting memorable achievements and records from previous editions of the tournament.


According to FIFA statistics, Okocha completed an astonishing 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s Round of 16 encounter against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. The feat was achieved against a formidable Italian side that featured some of the world's most respected defenders, including , and .


More than three decades later, the record remains unmatched, further cementing Okocha’s reputation as one of the most skilful players ever to grace the World Cup stage.


FIFA’s records show that Brazilian great and former England midfielder share second place with 13 successful dribbles in a World Cup match, while several other football legends recorded 12 dribbles in individual games.


The recognition serves as another reminder of Okocha’s enduring legacy in global football and his significant contribution to Nigeria’s rich football history. Widely celebrated for his flair, creativity and ball control, the former Super Eagles captain remains one of Africa’s most admired footballers.


FIFA also noted that Argentine superstar holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles across all World Cup appearances, with 125 completed take-ons during his tournament career.
