Hajj 2026: Over 1.5 Million Pilgrims Storm Saudi Arabia Despite Middle East Tensions

 By Kehinde Awosina

More than 1.5 million Muslim pilgrims from across the world have arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage, surpassing the number of international arrivals recorded during the 2025 exercise despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Saudi authorities disclosed that over 1,518,000 pilgrims had entered the kingdom from abroad as preparations intensify for the commencement of the annual pilgrimage in the holy city of Mecca. Officials said the figures are expected to increase further as more pilgrims continue to arrive before the main Hajj rites begin.

The development marks a slight increase from the 2025 Hajj season, when about 1.506 million international pilgrims participated in the exercise, according to Saudi statistics.

Reports indicate that the surge in arrivals comes despite concerns over instability in parts of the Middle East and temporary flight disruptions linked to regional conflicts. Nevertheless, pilgrims from different parts of the world have continued to troop into Saudi Arabia to fulfil one of Islam’s five pillars.

Saudi authorities have also intensified logistics, security and health preparations to ensure a smooth pilgrimage, with thousands of officials deployed across Mecca and Medina to manage crowd movement, transportation and emergency services.

The Hajj pilgrimage, which is obligatory for Muslims who are physically and financially capable, attracts millions of worshippers annually and remains one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
