Katsina: 16 Feared Killed as Bandits Launch Brutal Reprisal Attack on Village
By Kehinde Awosina
At least 16 villagers have been feared killed following a suspected reprisal attack by armed bandits on Kiliya village, near Bagagadi in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Security sources and local residents said the attackers stormed the community shortly after residents had finished Friday Juma’at prayers and were relaxing. The gunmen reportedly opened fire on villagers, forcing many to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Witnesses disclosed that several other residents were still missing as of the time of filing this report, while search efforts were ongoing to locate survivors and recover bodies from surrounding areas.
Preliminary information suggests the attack may have been carried out in retaliation for an earlier incident in which some suspected bandits were reportedly killed by members of the community days before the assault.
The latest violence adds to the growing wave of insecurity in Katsina State and other parts of northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently carry out deadly raids, kidnappings, and reprisal attacks on rural settlements.
Authorities are yet to issue an official casualty figure, but security operatives are said to have been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as efforts continue to secure the affected community and track the perpetrators.
