Lagos Expands Water Transport Network, Opens 50km Ferry Routes to Boost Commuter Safety and Connectivity

The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to improve water transportation infrastructure across the state with the completion of more than 50 kilometres of channelisation projects along key ferry routes, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda aimed at strengthening multimodal transportation.
The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, disclosed this during the 2026 ministerial press briefing held in Lagos, where he presented the ministry’s achievements over the last two years. According to him, the project is designed to improve navigation, expand ferry operations, and enhance safety on Lagos waterways.
Bush-Alebiosu explained that the completed channelisation works covered major routes including the Ikorodu–Mende channel, Ikorodu–Agboyi waterways, Five Cowries–Lekki–Lagoon–Parkview axis, Banana Island corridor, and the Ilado–Ilashe–Odofin route in Amuwo Odofin. He added that navigation buoys have also been installed to reduce accidents and improve movement for ferries and commercial boats.
The commissioner further revealed that the state government has commenced the installation of modern concrete floating pontoons at selected jetties to modernise the water transport system. Locations currently benefiting from the upgrades include Agboyi-Ketu, Bayeku, and Ijegun Egba, while additional improvements are planned for Ebute Ero, Ijede, Apa, Mile 2, and Mowo jetties.
He noted that the intervention would not only improve commuter safety and reduce travel time but also boost economic activities within riverine communities. The projects form part of the broader transportation integration plan of the Sanwo-Olu administration, which seeks to connect road, rail, and water transport systems for seamless mobility across Lagos.
