Lagos Strengthens Emergency Preparedness, Says No Cause for Alarm Over Congo Health Situation
By Kehinde Awosina
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has assured residents of the state’s readiness to respond swiftly to any emerging public health threats, emphasizing that the government maintains strong logistics, surveillance, and emergency response systems.
Abayomi explained that the state has maintained strategic stockpiles of essential medical supplies, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), gloves, sanitizers, and other critical commodities, which are pre-positioned for rapid deployment in case of emergencies.
He added that ambulance services are strategically stationed across key locations in Lagos to ensure prompt response to health-related incidents and emergencies.
According to him, the state’s health security approach is built around prevention, early detection, rapid reporting, and coordinated multi-sectoral response, describing preparedness as a permanent culture rather than a temporary reaction.
“Preparedness is not a temporary reaction for us; it is our permanent culture, and your safety is our ultimate responsibility,” he said.
The commissioner also reaffirmed Lagos State’s collaboration with the Federal Government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), noting that the state continues to provide evidence-based updates to guide public health actions.
While assuring residents that there is currently no cause for alarm, Abayomi urged the public to remain vigilant as authorities closely monitor developments in the Congo and surrounding regions.
He advised individuals who have recently travelled to affected areas in Congo or Uganda, or those who have had close contact with such travellers and are experiencing health concerns, to seek immediate medical attention.
For assistance, he listed emergency contact numbers as 767 or 112, as well as the State Epidemiologist on 0802 316 9485.
Lagos State, he said, remains vigilant, organized, and safe as it continues to monitor the situation closely.
