Lawan Clinches APC Senate Ticket for Historic Sixth Term Bid in Yobe North
By Kehinde Awosina
Former President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Yobe North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development officially hands the veteran lawmaker the party’s senatorial ticket, paving the way for what could become an unprecedented eighth term in the National Assembly.
Lawan, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s longest-serving legislators, has maintained a strong political presence in Yobe State and at the national level for decades. His emergence as the APC consensus candidate further reinforces his influence within the ruling party and his continued dominance in Yobe North politics.
Party stakeholders and supporters across the district reportedly endorsed the former Senate President during consultations leading to the primary process, citing his legislative experience, loyalty to the APC, and contributions to governance and representation over the years.
Having first entered the National Assembly in 1999 as a member of the House of Representatives before moving to the Senate in 2007, Lawan has remained a central figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. He served as Senate President between 2019 and 2023 and previously held several strategic leadership positions in the upper legislative chamber.
Political observers say his latest victory underscores his enduring grassroots support and political structure in Yobe North, where he continues to command significant influence.
With the APC ticket now secured, Lawan is expected to lead the party into the 2027 senatorial contest as one of the most experienced lawmakers seeking re-election in the country.
