NCDC Raises Alarm Over Rising Ebola Threat in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that Nigeria is at high risk of an Ebola outbreak following the resurgence of the disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

In a public health advisory issued by the agency’s Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, the NCDC said increased cross-border movement, international travel, and uncertainty surrounding the scale of the outbreak in the affected countries have heightened concerns about possible importation of the virus into Nigeria.

The agency noted that although no confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Nigeria, surveillance and emergency preparedness measures have been intensified nationwide to prevent any outbreak.

According to the NCDC, its latest risk assessment identified border communities, international airports, transport hubs, and points of entry as areas requiring strict monitoring. The agency also warned that Ebola symptoms could easily be mistaken for other endemic illnesses such as malaria and Lassa fever, potentially delaying detection and response.

Health authorities said the National Emergency Operations Centre has been placed on alert mode, while collaboration with the Port Health Services and other stakeholders has been strengthened to improve screening and response capacity across the country.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa. The World Health Organization recently raised the national risk level of the outbreak in Congo to “very high,” citing rising infections and deaths linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which currently has no approved vaccine.

The WHO and other international health agencies have continued to urge countries to strengthen surveillance systems and cross-border cooperation to curb the spread of the disease.
