“Nigeria Shall Rise Again” — Methodist Bishop Urges Tinubu To Declare State of Emergency On Insecurity

The Methodist Bishop of Imesi-Ile Diocese, Rt. Rev. Rufus Oluwasegun Atolaye, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive steps toward addressing insecurity and worsening economic hardship in Nigeria.

The cleric made the remarks during his episcopal address at the 8th Annual Synod of the Methodist Diocese of Imesi-Ile, held at the Otan-Ile Circuit in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State. The synod activities ran from May 15 to May 17, 2026, and concluded with a thanksgiving service.

Speaking during the “State of the Nation” segment of his address, Bishop Atolaye expressed concern over the growing insecurity, poverty and unemployment facing the country, saying many Nigerians are losing confidence due to persistent kidnappings and economic difficulties.

According to him, insecurity has continued to affect the nation’s economy, forcing some foreign companies to shut down operations while unemployment keeps increasing.

The bishop urged President Tinubu to rise to the challenge confronting the nation, noting that although the current administration inherited many of the problems from previous governments, strong leadership and commitment could restore peace and stability.

He also advocated for the declaration of a state of emergency on insecurity, stressing that state governments receiving security votes should be held accountable for security situations within their domains.

Rt. Rev. Atolaye lamented the increasing cases of kidnapping across the country, stating that several victims remain in captivity despite huge ransom payments by families.

The cleric further stated that government must provide basic needs such as security and food for citizens in order to retain public confidence.

Despite the challenges, the bishop expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its difficulties and regain its position as a leading nation in Africa. He called on citizens to continue praying for the country and for national leaders, while encouraging Nigerians to avoid speaking negatively about the nation.

He added that unity, prayers and collective responsibility remain essential to rebuilding the country and overcoming the current challenges.
