Omo-Agege Loses Delta Central NDC Ticket as Dema Secures Landslide Primary Victory
By Kehinde Awosina
Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has suffered a significant political setback after losing the New Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial primary for Delta Central to Olorogun Dr. Onome Bernice Dema.
Dema, a former President of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) North America, pulled off a commanding performance across several local government areas to clinch the party’s ticket ahead of the highly anticipated general election.
Although Omo-Agege recorded strong showings in his traditional strongholds—Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu, and Uvwie—the margins were not enough to offset Dema’s overwhelming dominance in other parts of the district.
The decisive blow came from Sapele and Okpe Local Government Areas, where Dema recorded massive victories that effectively sealed the outcome. In Sapele, she polled 1,352 votes while Omo-Agege managed just four. In Okpe, she widened the gap further with 1,650 votes compared to Omo-Agege’s five.
Despite Omo-Agege’s lead in Ughelli North with 1,024 votes and a narrow edge in Ughelli South, where he scored 1,160 votes against Dema’s 1,146, those gains were insufficient to overturn the heavy losses elsewhere.
In Udu, Omo-Agege secured 900 votes while Dema garnered 250, and in Uvwie, he led with 400 votes against her 200. Ethiope West produced one of the tightest results, with Omo-Agege edging it 360 to 340. However, results from Ethiope East were cancelled and not included in the final computation.
At the end of the collation, Dema emerged victorious with a total of 4,973 votes, while Omo-Agege finished with 3,853 votes. Other contenders, Akpodiete and Ineneji, polled 92 and 31 votes respectively.
Political analysts say Dema’s sweeping victories in Sapele and Okpe proved decisive, neutralizing Omo-Agege’s influence in his core bases and ultimately reshaping the outcome of the contest.
Final Results
- Onome Bernice Dema – 4,973 votes
- Ovie Omo-Agege – 3,853 votes
- Akpodiete – 92 votes
- Ineneji – 31 votes
With the primary concluded, Dema is expected to represent the NDC in the Delta Central senatorial election, while attention now shifts to Omo-Agege’s next political move following the unexpected defeat.
