Osun State has been ranked sixth among Nigeria’s 36 states in terms of democratic performance, according to a new assessment that evaluates governance practices and civic engagement across the country.
The report, titled the State of Democratic Performance Index, was released by the Kimpact Development Initiative, an Abuja-based civic group focused on strengthening democratic governance and accountability.
According to the ranking, Oyo State emerged as the top-performing state with a score of 70.0 percent, followed by Yobe State with 64.3 percent. Ekiti State placed third with 63.9 percent, while Nasarawa and Ondo States followed in fourth and fifth positions, scoring 64.4 percent and 61.0 percent respectively. Osun State completed the top six with a score of 60.6 percent.
The organisation classified the six leading states as having “moderate” democratic performance based on indicators used in the assessment.
The report also noted significant disparities across the federation, with some states ranking much lower in democratic performance, reflecting uneven progress in governance quality, civic participation, and institutional accountability.
The findings are expected to spark further discussions on democratic consolidation and governance reforms across Nigeria’s subnational levels.
