Osun Government Warns Residents Over Heavy Rainfall, Flooding

 By Kehinde Awosina

The Osun State Government has alerted residents across the state to prepare for possible heavy rainfall, flash floods, windstorms, and other extreme weather conditions expected during the peak of the rainy season.

In a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo, the government warned that recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicate that several communities in the state could experience intense rainfall capable of triggering flooding, erosion, destruction of property, and disruption of movement.

The government noted that vulnerable areas, especially riverbank communities, low-lying environments, and locations with poor drainage systems, remain at higher risk during the period.

According to the statement, residents have been advised to immediately clear blocked drainage channels around homes, offices, markets, and business premises in order to ensure free flow of water. The government also cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and waterways, describing the act as a major contributor to flooding across urban centres.

Residents were further urged to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall, stay away from flooded roads and bridges, and secure weak structures, rooftops, trees, signboards, and electric poles against possible windstorms.

The government stressed the need for parents and guardians to closely monitor children during periods of thunderstorms and heavy downpour to prevent avoidable accidents.

School authorities, transport operators, traders, and community leaders were equally advised to prioritize safety measures and comply with all environmental and emergency directives issued by relevant authorities.

The statement added that emergency response teams and government agencies across the state have already been placed on high alert to strengthen monitoring and rapid response efforts in affected areas.

The government also warned that it would not tolerate activities capable of worsening environmental hazards, particularly the blockage of drainage systems and improper waste disposal.

Director-General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Professor Chinwe Obuaku, urged residents to take the warning seriously in order to protect lives and property during the rainy season.
