Osun Govt Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Target Accord Leaders Ahead of Governorship Election

The Osun State Government has alleged that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has deployed a special police squad to carry out operations aimed at arresting and allegedly eliminating leaders of the Accord Party and top government officials ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.

In a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the government claimed it received credible intelligence indicating that the special squad, allegedly led by CSP Moses Lahor, had been mobilised to Osun State for what it described as a “decapitation operation” against notable Accord Party figures.

According to the statement, the squad was allegedly being prepared for selective operations targeting party officials across the state under the guise of investigation and prosecution.

The government further alleged that the squad had held several meetings with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), accusing him of providing logistics support for the operation.

It specifically claimed that two Toyota 18-seater buses and a Sienna vehicle were allegedly made available to aid the squad’s movement across the state.

The statement also alleged that the operation was being planned without the knowledge of the Osun State Commissioner of Police.

The government accused CSP Lahor, who reportedly once served in the Osun State Police Command’s anti-kidnapping unit, of previously being involved in the shooting of a National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chieftain, Comrade Nurudeen Alowonle, during his service in the state.

According to the statement, the officer was later transferred out of Osun before allegedly finding his way into the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police through the influence of unnamed political figures.

The Osun Government and the Accord Party leadership appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the international community to intervene and prevent what they described as a looming threat to peace and political stability in the state.

The statement further warned against the use of security agencies for political purposes, insisting that the people of Osun State would resist any form of intimidation through lawful means.

It also accused the opposition APC of allegedly plotting to manipulate the forthcoming governorship election through intimidation and unlawful tactics.

Neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the APC governorship candidate had officially responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
