Osun Lawmaker Questions Wole Oke Defection Claims, Says “No Politician Is a Landlord, The People Own Power"

A member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewunmi Adeyemi Irekandu, has raised concerns over claims surrounding the recent political defection involving federal lawmaker Hon. Wole Oke, alleging that reports of the number of supporters who accompanied him were exaggerated.

Speaking on Western Spring Television earlier on Thursday, Irekandu said he was surprised to learn that only about 50 individuals reportedly defected alongside Wole Oke from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the figure as inconsistent with public perception.

Beyond the controversy over the defection numbers, the lawmaker also faulted the use of the term “landlord” in political discussions, describing it as disrespectful to the electorate.

“It is an insult to the people for any politician to describe himself as the ‘landlord.’ Nobody is the landlord; the people are the true landlords,” he said.

The lawmaker also commented on his political ambition regarding the speakership of the Osun State House of Assembly, stating that while aspirations exist, he remains supportive of the current Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, adding that party leadership would determine future decisions when the time comes.

Adeyemi, who represents Obokun Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, maintained that political authority resides with the people and urged leaders to adopt more humble and democratic expressions in their engagement with citizens.

The remarks have since generated reactions within political circles in Osun State, amid ongoing political realignments ahead of future elections.
