Osun Students Protest at Gangaria Empowerment Programme Over Alleged Neglect of Welfare Needs

 By Kehinde Awosina

Students from across Irepodun/Olorunda/Orolu/Osogbo Federal Constituency on Monday staged a protest at the empowerment programme organised by the lawmaker representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, Adewale Morufu Adebayo, accusing him of neglecting students and failing to address their welfare needs.

The protest took place at the GMT Hotel open field opposite Jerry Paul Ring Road in Osogbo, where hundreds of beneficiaries and supporters had gathered for the empowerment event.

The protesting students, led by the President of the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), Comrade Ajibola Folajimi, were joined by student presidents from the four local governments within the federal constituency.

Carrying placards with different inscriptions, the students expressed dissatisfaction over what they described as the continuous exclusion of students from constituency empowerment initiatives and developmental programmes.

Addressing journalists during the protest, Comrade Folajimi said students in the constituency had endured prolonged hardship without meaningful intervention from the federal lawmaker. He noted that many undergraduates and other young people in the area were battling rising tuition fees, transportation costs, and poor access to educational support.

The student leaders demanded the introduction of bursary awards, scholarship schemes, educational grants, and other youth-focused programmes aimed at improving students’ welfare and academic pursuits.

According to the protesters, elected representatives should prioritise education and youth development as part of their constituency responsibilities rather than focusing solely on general empowerment distributions.
