Otti Boasts of 414 Road Projects, Says Abia Debt Reduced by 60% in Three Years

 By Kehinde Awosina

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has highlighted what he described as major achievements of his administration, revealing that his government has constructed and rehabilitated 414 roads across the state while also cutting the state’s debt profile by about 60 percent within three years.

Otti made the disclosure while speaking on the performance of his administration, insisting that prudent financial management and infrastructure development remain central to his government’s agenda in Abia State.

According to the governor, the debt burden inherited from previous administrations has been drastically reduced through fiscal discipline, improved revenue management, and a deliberate decision to avoid reckless borrowing. Reports linked to the Abia State Debt Management Office indicated that the state’s debt profile dropped from about ₦191 billion to roughly ₦48 billion under the current administration.

Data from fiscal and economic analysts also show that Abia recorded one of the sharpest reductions in domestic debt among Nigerian states between 2023 and 2025, with authorities attributing the development to aggressive debt repayment and tighter financial controls.

The governor said the administration has focused heavily on road infrastructure to improve transportation, commerce, and economic activities across the state. Several strategic road projects in Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia, Arochukwu, and other communities are either completed or ongoing as part of the wider infrastructure renewal programme.

Otti also maintained that his government has resisted borrowing for recurrent expenditure, stressing that any future loans would only be tied to productive investments capable of generating economic value for the state.

Beyond roads and debt reduction, the administration says it has invested in healthcare, education, security, and youth empowerment programmes, while also pushing a long-term development blueprint aimed at transforming Abia’s economy over the next 25 years.

The governor’s claims have continued to generate reactions on social media, with supporters praising the pace of infrastructure delivery, while critics demand more transparency regarding project costs and debt repayment figures.
