The Federal Government has announced that more than 1.5 million Nigerian students are currently benefiting from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing it as the largest and fastest-growing public student loan scheme in Africa.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known while highlighting the progress of the initiative under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to him, over ₦280 billion has so far been disbursed to cover both institutional fees and student upkeep allowances, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to tertiary education across the country.
Idris described the development as another major fulfilment of the administration’s promises on education and human capital development, noting that the scheme continues to expand rapidly in reach and impact.
He added that the programme, managed through NELFUND, is already transforming access to higher education for thousands of families, easing the burden of tuition payments and supporting students’ daily needs.
The government maintained that the initiative reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to widening educational opportunities and strengthening Nigeria’s future workforce under the renewed hope agenda.
