Panic as Gunmen Kill Worshippers, Kidnap 15 in Kwara Attack

 By Kehinde Awosina

Armed assailants have attacked a prayer ground in Kwara State, killing at least three worshippers and abducting about 15 others in a violent overnight raid that has intensified concerns over rising insecurity in parts of north-central Nigeria.

According to initial reports, the attackers stormed the religious gathering during a prayer session, opening fire on participants before whisking away several others into nearby forest areas. Witnesses said the gunmen operated for several minutes, causing panic as worshippers attempted to flee for safety.

Security sources confirmed that at least three people were shot dead on the spot, while fifteen others were taken hostage by the attackers. Local vigilantes and security operatives have since launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation aimed at tracking down the kidnappers and rescuing the victims.

The Kwara State Police Command has also reportedly deployed tactical teams to the area, while urging residents to remain calm and provide useful intelligence that could assist ongoing operations.

The incident adds to a growing pattern of armed attacks and mass abductions targeting rural communities and places of worship across Kwara State and neighbouring areas in recent months, where gunmen have repeatedly struck churches, prayer grounds, and highways.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the abducted victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
