Peter Obi Blasts Tinubu’s Foreign Trip, Demands Evidence of Economic Gains

 By Kehinde Awosina

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the recent foreign trip of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that state visits should deliver measurable economic benefits rather than ceremonial appearances.

In a strongly worded reaction, Obi said international diplomacy must go beyond “fashion parades” and photo opportunities, stressing that every foreign engagement by national leaders should translate into investments, industrial partnerships, technology transfer, job creation and economic growth for citizens.

The former Anambra State governor compared Tinubu’s recent visit to the United Kingdom with the reported outcome of former United States President Donald J. Trump’s recent diplomatic engagement with China.

According to Obi, Trump’s delegation reportedly included top government officials and leading global business executives such as Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Jensen Huang and other major industry players, leading to multi-billion-dollar trade agreements and about 200 Boeing aircraft orders.

He argued that serious nations align diplomacy with economic expansion, innovation and productivity.

“I hope lessons can be learned from these recent visits when compared with the President of Nigeria’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom,” Obi stated.

The former presidential candidate questioned the economic value of Tinubu’s entourage, which he claimed included governors, ministers, lawmakers, security personnel, aides and associates.

Obi asked what direct benefits Nigeria secured from the trip, including investments, factories, agricultural partnerships, manufacturing deals, technology agreements and employment opportunities for Nigerian youths.

“What exactly did Nigeria bring home?” he queried.

He maintained that symbolism without substance would not address the hardship facing millions of Nigerians.

“It is not enough to ride horses, wear matching uniforms, attend royal banquets and release glossy photographs. Symbolism without substance cannot feed hungry citizens,” Obi said.

The Labour Party chieftain lamented Nigeria’s current economic realities, including insecurity, unemployment, rising poverty, food inflation, naira depreciation and declining industrial productivity.

According to him, every public expenditure on foreign trips must produce visible national value and economic opportunities for citizens.

Obi further stressed that Nigeria needs leadership focused on productivity and measurable economic outcomes rather than ceremonies and optics.
