Presidency Denies Claims Tinubu Plans to Rename Nigeria, Scrap Sharia Law

 By Kehinde Awosina

The Presidency has dismissed as false reports circulating online alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern part of the country.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Presidency described the report as fake, misleading and aimed at creating tension in the country ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

The statement, signed by Bayo Onanuga, said the viral publication falsely claimed that the President intended to forward a constitutional amendment bill, allegedly code-named “Project True Federation,” to the National Assembly before the elections.

According to the Presidency, there is no such proposal before the government, stressing that the story was fabricated by individuals seeking to stir political unrest and divide Nigerians along sensitive lines.

The statement noted that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict legal and legislative process, requiring broad support from both chambers of the National Assembly of Nigeria as well as approval by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.

The Presidency maintained that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering development-oriented policies rather than engaging in divisive political agendas.

It also warned Nigerians against spreading or believing unverified information, especially as political activities intensify ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The Presidency urged citizens to remain vigilant and rely on credible sources for information relating to government policies and national issues.
