Sanusi, Bayero Agree on Suspension of Kano Sallah Durbar Amid Tension Over Emirship Dispute
By Kehinde Awosina
The two rival claimants to the Kano Emirate throne, Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, have jointly announced the suspension of all planned Sallah Durbar celebrations for this year’s Eid-el-Kabir in Kano State.
The decision comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding the emirship dispute, which has continued to generate controversy over the leadership of the historic Kano Emirate. The Durbar, a major cultural highlight of the Eid festivities featuring horse-riding processions and traditional displays, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic events in northern Nigeria.
According to reports, both emirs agreed that the suspension was necessary to preserve peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order during the festive period, as concerns over security and potential clashes remain high.
The Durbar celebrations typically involve elaborate royal processions through the streets of Kano, drawing large crowds of residents and visitors. However, the longstanding dispute between the two royal figures has raised fears of parallel events and possible unrest.
Authorities and stakeholders have repeatedly called for calm, while urging respect for legal and traditional processes aimed at resolving the emirship tussle that has divided the Kano Emirate in recent years.
The suspension is expected to ease tensions and allow Muslims in the state to observe Eid-el-Kabir in a more peaceful and orderly atmosphere.
