Shock in Rivers Politics as Fubara Withdraws From APC Governorship Race
By Kehinde Awosina
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reportedly withdrawn from the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Rivers State, a development that has further intensified the political tension surrounding the party’s 2027 succession battle. According to reports, Fubara’s withdrawal comes amid growing internal disagreements and allegations that loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had gained stronger control of the APC structure in the state.
The Rivers governor had recently faced uncertainty over his second-term ambition following reports that several of his loyalists were disqualified during the APC screening process, while aspirants believed to be aligned with Wike were cleared to contest.
Although details surrounding his withdrawal remain unclear, the move is already generating reactions across political circles and social media, with many observers linking it to the lingering feud between Fubara and Wike over the control of Rivers State’s political structure. The crisis between both leaders had previously triggered a major political standoff in the state and eventually led to federal intervention.
Fubara, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in late 2025, had earlier denied rumours of leaving the ruling party, insisting he remained committed to the APC despite the challenges surrounding the primaries.
