President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the ongoing 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries across the country as a clear reflection of internal democracy and grassroots political participation within the ruling party.

The President made the remarks on Saturday after participating in the APC Presidential Primaries at Ikoyi-Obalende Ward L2 in Lagos State alongside the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

President Tinubu was received at the polling venue by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, former Minister of Finance Wale Edun, and other prominent party leaders.

Speaking after casting his vote, the President commended party members for conducting themselves peacefully and orderly throughout the exercise, noting that the process reflected the strength of democratic participation within the APC.

According to him, the primaries have shown that the party remains committed to allowing members at the grassroots level to actively participate in choosing leaders and representatives.

“This is a demonstration of internal democracy, and it has been going on very well according to plan. This is grassroots politics where every member of the party has the right to participate,” Tinubu said.

He added that the peaceful conduct and organisation of the exercise further proved the party’s dedication to democratic principles.

The President also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primaries across different states, praising governors and party stakeholders for overseeing a transparent process from the ward congresses to delegate accreditation and membership validation.

“I am very satisfied that governors have done well in their various states, from the ward congresses to local government congresses, delegate accreditation, validation, membership registration and the certification of the electoral process,” he stated.

President Tinubu further commended electoral officials, security agencies and party leaders for ensuring a smooth and credible exercise nationwide.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and promoting national unity, stressing that democratic stability remains essential to national development.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance, political stability and policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens across the country.

The statement was issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on May 23, 2026.
