"We Borrow to Build Roads" ; Umahi Speaks on Tinubu 's Infrastructure Drive
By Kehinde Awosina
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has defended the borrowing policy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the loans are being used to finance critical infrastructure projects across the country.
Umahi disclosed that the total value of ongoing road and bridge projects under the current administration, including inherited and newly introduced legacy projects, stands at about N34 trillion.
According to the minister, the huge investment in infrastructure development explains why the Federal Government continues to seek loans to fund projects aimed at improving transportation and economic growth nationwide.
He noted that several Nigerians have questioned the administration’s borrowing strategy, but insisted that the funds are being channeled into visible developmental projects.
“Some Nigerians are asking why the President is borrowing money. We are borrowing because of the things we are doing on our roads and bridges,” Umahi said.
The former governor added that the Tinubu administration remains committed to expanding and rehabilitating federal road networks, describing infrastructure development as a major pillar of the government’s economic agenda.
Umahi maintained that many of the ongoing projects are designed to improve connectivity, ease movement of goods and services, and stimulate economic activities across different parts of the country.
