“We Were Simply Told Tinubu Had Chosen Abubakar” — Tuggar Alleges Imposition in Bauchi APC
By Kehinde Awosina
Former Minister Yusuf Tuggar has faulted the process that produced the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Bauchi State, alleging that the party failed to conduct a democratic primary election ahead of the 2027 polls.
Tuggar claimed that party stakeholders were informed by the APC National Chairman that former Governor Muhammad Abubakar had already been chosen as the party’s candidate, with the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu.
The former minister described the development as undemocratic, insisting that party members were denied the opportunity to participate in a transparent primary process.
According to him, the decision to hand the ticket to Abubakar was presented as a final directive from the Presidency rather than the outcome of an internal party contest.
Tuggar also accused Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, of lobbying President Tinubu to stop him from contesting for the APC governorship ticket in Bauchi State.
“This is not democracy. The President should not be choosing governorship candidates for us. We did not conduct primaries; we were simply told that Tinubu had chosen Abubakar as the APC governorship candidate for Bauchi State,” Tuggar stated.
The allegation is expected to deepen concerns over internal democracy within the APC as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
