2027: Jega Calls for Amendment of Electoral Act Ahead of General Elections

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has urged lawmakers to urgently review certain provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act, warning that some sections of the law could undermine the credibility and effectiveness of future elections.

Jega made the call while presenting a paper titled "Some Reflections on the 2026 Electoral Act and Nigeria's Electoral Democracy" at the public presentation of A Collection of Essays: Readings on the Legislature, a book written by policy expert Ladi Hamalai in Abuja.

According to him, although the Electoral Act was introduced with the intention of improving the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process, it still contains provisions that require further scrutiny. He noted that some aspects of the law are ambiguous and could create challenges during election administration if left unchanged.

Jega stressed that amending the identified sections before the 2027 general elections would help strengthen Nigeria's electoral system, eliminate uncertainties in the law, and boost public confidence in the democratic process. He also called on relevant stakeholders to carefully examine the legislation and make necessary adjustments to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

Accord Shocks APC, Wins Omisore’s Polling Unit in Osun Governorship Election

  By Abdulahi Musa  The Accord Party has won the governorship election at the polling unit of former Osun Deputy Governor and ex-National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore. Results uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) showed that Accord secured 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1 (Moore), St. Gabriel Primary School, in Ife East Local Government Area. The APC placed second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only a few votes at the polling unit. The development marks another early gain for Accord as the collation of results from polling units across Osun State continues.
