₦210tn Audit Scandal: Senate Orders Arrest of Ex-NNPCL Boss Kyari
The Nigerian Senate has ordered the appearance of former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, over alleged financial discrepancies totaling about ₦210 trillion in the company's audited accounts between 2017 and 2023. The Senate Public Accounts Committee warned that a warrant of arrest could be issued if Kyari and other former top officials fail to honour the invitation.
According to the committee, the disputed amount consists of approximately ₦103 trillion allegedly spent by NNPCL and its joint venture partners, as well as ₦107 trillion recorded as receivables that lawmakers say have not been adequately explained.
The Senate also summoned former Chief Financial Officer Umar Isa and former NAPIMS General Manager Bala Wunti to appear before the panel alongside the current NNPCL management. The committee, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, said the former officials must provide explanations regarding the transactions and other issues raised in the audit reports.
Among the concerns raised by lawmakers is an alleged ₦5 billion expenditure on the transition from NNPC to NNPCL, which the committee described as requiring satisfactory explanation. The committee further recommended a forensic audit of NNPCL's financial statements for the period under review.
Senator Wadada stated that NNPCL should account for the entire ₦210 trillion identified in the audit reports, stressing that the Senate is determined to establish accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.
