ADC Among Five Parties Ordered Deregistered
By Abdulahi Musa
Based on reports, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties for allegedly failing to meet constitutional requirements for their continued existence.
The affected parties reportedly include the ADC, Accord Party, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). The suit was instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators, which argued that the parties no longer satisfied constitutional conditions required to remain registered political parties.
The case, which has generated significant political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections, sought an order compelling INEC to remove the affected parties from its register. The Attorney-General of the Federation had also backed the move, maintaining that the parties failed to comply with provisions of the Constitution governing political parties.
The court's ruling is expected to have major implications for Nigeria's political landscape, particularly for the ADC, which has recently emerged as a platform attracting prominent opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
INEC is expected to study the judgment and determine the next steps regarding the implementation of the court's directive.
