ADC Rocked as Babachir Lawal Resigns, Endorses Tinubu over Atiku
By Kehinde Awosina
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party's presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Lawal disclosed his decision shortly after the conclusion of the party's presidential primary, alleging that the exercise was manipulated in favour of Atiku.
The former SGF claimed that the outcome of the primary election had been predetermined, insisting that the process did not reflect the will of party members. According to him, he could not remain in a party where internal democratic processes were allegedly compromised.
"I will not be part of Atiku's rigging machine in the 2027 presidential election," Lawal reportedly stated while explaining the reasons behind his departure from the party.
In a scathing criticism of the former vice president, Lawal described Atiku as incompetent and accused him of promoting divisive politics along ethnic and religious lines. He argued that such qualities make the ADC flagbearer unfit for Nigeria's highest office.
The former SGF further stated that, despite his differences with the current administration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would still be a better option for Nigeria than Atiku.
Lawal's resignation is expected to trigger fresh political debates within opposition circles as parties intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Neither Atiku Abubakar nor the ADC leadership had officially responded to Lawal's allegations at the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid growing political realignments and heightened activities among major political actors seeking to shape the outcome of the next presidential contest.
