Akpabio Did Not Promise APC Tickets to Defeated Senators — Aide Clarifies

 By Kehinde Awosina

The Media Adviser to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed claims that his principal promised automatic tickets of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to senators who failed to secure their parties' nominations for the 2027 general elections.

The clarification followed public reactions to remarks made by Akpabio during plenary, where he acknowledged that a number of serving senators lost their respective party primaries and stated that the Senate leadership was exploring ways to address their concerns.

According to the aide, the Senate President's comments were taken out of context. He explained that Akpabio merely expressed sympathy for affected lawmakers and noted that efforts were being made to identify lawful and democratic options available to them, irrespective of party affiliation.

The adviser stressed that Akpabio neither promised nor implied that APC primary results would be altered in favour of any defeated senator. Rather, he said the Senate President was offering encouragement to colleagues who suffered political setbacks and reaffirming the leadership's commitment to supporting members within the bounds of the law.

The controversy emerged after Akpabio disclosed that about 40 serving senators failed to secure return tickets during the recent primaries, a development that sparked speculation about possible interventions on behalf of affected lawmakers.

However, the aide maintained that any interpretation suggesting the Senate President guaranteed APC tickets to senators who lost primaries was inaccurate, misleading and a distortion of his remarks.
