Army Executes Major Rescue Mission, Frees 360 Abductees From Terrorist Stronghold

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have rescued 360 abducted civilians from a heavily fortified Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) stronghold in the Mandara Mountains of southern Borno State in what military authorities described as one of the most significant hostage rescue operations in the North-East in recent years.

The rescued victims, comprising men, women and children, had been held captive under harsh conditions after being abducted from several communities, particularly within the Ngoshe axis of Gwoza Local Government Area.

Military authorities said the operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering, covert reconnaissance and meticulous planning involving Human Intelligence (HUMINT), Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and sustained Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The intelligence-led strategy enabled troops to pinpoint the exact location of the hostages, assess terrorist dispositions and identify weaknesses within the insurgent network.

According to the military, a breakthrough was achieved after intelligence assets successfully penetrated the terrorist network, providing actionable information on the whereabouts of the abductees, insurgent commanders and internal security arrangements within the enclave.

Acting on the intelligence, Special Forces and troops of Sector 1 launched a coordinated multi-axis assault, infiltrating the objective area under the cover of darkness while blocking forces sealed off potential escape routes. The operation reportedly achieved complete tactical surprise, forcing several insurgents to flee while others surrendered.

The hostages were secured, medically screened and evacuated to safety. However, the military disclosed that two infants died from exhaustion during the evacuation due to the difficult mountainous terrain and the severe conditions endured during captivity.

The Military High Command commended the troops for their professionalism, courage and discipline, describing the mission as a testament to the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and enhanced synergy among security agencies.

It also assured Nigerians that follow-up clearance operations are ongoing to eliminate remaining terrorist elements, dismantle support networks and prevent future abductions in the region.

The statement was signed by Lieutenant Colonel Haruna M. Sani, Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI.
