Atiku Hails Appeal Court Ruling on ADC, Warns Against Judicial Threats to Democracy
By Abdulahi Musa
The Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election and Waziri Adamawa, Atiku Abubakar, has welcomed the decision of the Court of Appeal to stay the execution of a Federal High Court judgment that sought the deregistration of the ADC and four other political parties.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Atiku described the appellate court's decision as a significant development, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was the party that initiated the application for the stay of execution.
According to him, the ruling offers a measure of relief amid growing concerns over what he described as conflicting judicial pronouncements and politically influenced court decisions that have drawn widespread public attention to the judiciary.
The former Vice President echoed the position earlier expressed by ADC National Chairman, David Mark, who recently stated that the judiciary, rather than the ADC, is currently under scrutiny over the controversy surrounding the party's deregistration.
Atiku warned that any attempt to weaken Nigeria's democratic institutions through what he termed judicial manipulation would pose a serious threat to the country's democratic development.
He stressed that Nigeria's democracy, which has been built through years of struggle and sacrifice, must not be undermined by actions capable of eroding public confidence in the rule of law and democratic governance.
The ADC presidential candidate further stated that those entrusted with the responsibility of administering justice would ultimately be held accountable by history if democratic principles are compromised through questionable judicial actions.
He, however, expressed optimism that the judiciary still has an opportunity to strengthen public trust by upholding constitutional provisions, protecting the rule of law, and acting in the interest of the Nigerian people.
Atiku maintained that the latest appellate court decision represents an important step toward preserving democratic values and ensuring that political competition remains guided by legal and constitutional principles rather than judicial controversies.
