Atiku Media Office Fires Back at Babachir Lawal, Rejects ‘Distortion’ of Insecurity Record

The Atiku Media Office has reacted strongly to comments credited to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, describing them as “revisionist” and an attempt to distort the record of public discourse on insecurity in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Paul Ibe, the office said Atiku Abubakar has consistently condemned terrorist attacks, banditry, and kidnapping incidents across the country, while also offering policy-driven solutions to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

The statement emphasized that Atiku Abubakar has repeatedly criticized the Federal Government’s handling of security challenges under President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the country’s security system requires urgent restructuring, improved intelligence coordination, and decentralised response mechanisms.

It further noted that the former Vice President has advocated for legal reforms to empower state-level security outfits, stronger community intelligence systems, psychological and economic support for victims, and the establishment of special courts to prosecute terrorism-related cases, including consideration of capital punishment for convicted offenders.

The statement also urged the public to disregard what it described as “personal attacks,” insisting that Atiku Abubakar’s position on national security has remained consistent, evidence-based, and widely documented across multiple national engagements.
