Atiku Reportedly Picks Amaechi as Running Mate Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly selected former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

According to reports, the development comes amid ongoing political realignments within the opposition coalition as preparations intensify ahead of the polls scheduled for January 2027. The selection is believed to be part of efforts to strengthen the ADC’s presidential ticket and boost its chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku, who previously served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, has been a recurring presidential contender in several election cycles. His latest political move is seen as a strategic attempt to consolidate support across different regions of the country.

Rotimi Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, was one of the key figures in the ADC presidential primary, where he reportedly contested against Atiku before political consultations led to renewed discussions on a joint ticket.

Political observers say the reported pairing signals an effort to unify major opposition blocs and reconcile key political interests ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive election season.

The development also comes at a time when Nigeria’s opposition coalition is undergoing internal restructuring, with some key figures recently exiting the alliance, raising questions about its stability and electoral strength.

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Rotimi Amaechi has issued an official confirmation at the time of filing this report.

As political activities intensify nationwide, the emergence of the Atiku-Amaechi ticket is expected to further shape early debates around the 2027 presidential race.
