The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the biggest edition in the tournament's history, featuring 48 teams, three host nations, and a record number of matches. It will be jointly hosted by the Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Tournament Dates
Opening match: 11 June 2026
Final: 19 July 2026
Final venue: MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey area)
New Format
For the first time, the World Cup will feature 48 teams, up from 32.
How it works:
12 groups of four teams
Top two teams from each group qualify automatically
Eight best third-placed teams also advance
A new Round of 32 is introduced
Teams reaching the final could play up to eight matches instead of seven
Host Cities:
1. Canada: Toronto and ancouver
2. Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey
2. United States: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle
Qualified Teams
Among the nations already qualified are:
Africa: Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Côte d'Ivoire
South America: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Europe, England, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal
And many others across the six continental confederations.

FIFA unveiled three mascots representing the host nations:
Maple™ the Moose (Canada)
Zayu™ the Jaguar (Mexico)
Clutch™ the Bald Eagle (United States)

Some of the tournament's most iconic venues include:
MetLife Stadium – Final venue
Estadio Azteca – Historic stadium that has hosted previous World Cup finals
AT&T Stadium – Scheduled to host the most matches
Mercedes-Benz Stadium – One of the tournament's premier modern venues
New Spectator Rule
FIFA recently confirmed that fans attending matches in the United States and Canada will be allowed to bring one factory-sealed disposable water bottle into stadiums, alongside other heat-mitigation measures such as hydration stations and cooling zones.
With 48 teams, 104 matches and three host countries, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be the largest football tournament ever staged.
