Candidates Stranded as WAEC Exam Delays Stretch Into Evening Across Centres

Concerns are mounting among candidates and school administrators over persistent delays in the conduct of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with the Agricultural Science Practical examination scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2026, reportedly affected in several centres.

At Erin Community Grammar School, Erin-Ijesa, the Agricultural Science Practical paper, originally slated to hold between 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., had yet to commence as of 7:50 p.m., according to information obtained from a source who requested anonymity.

The source described the situation as part of a recurring pattern since the commencement of the examination but noted that the delay experienced on Thursday was particularly severe.

According to the report, no official communication had been received from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) regarding the reason for the delay or the expected commencement time.

Despite the uncertainty, the school reportedly made contingency arrangements to accommodate candidates, ensuring that examination halls remained illuminated through generator power. However, the prolonged delay imposed additional operational costs on the school amid rising fuel prices.

The incident has renewed concerns among stakeholders about the welfare of candidates, the impact of late-night examinations on performance, and the need for improved coordination and communication by examination authorities.

As of the time of filing this report, WAEC had not issued an official statement on the cause of the delay.
