Fatal Crash, Security Threats Behind WASSCE Disruptions — WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained the reasons behind the delayed conduct of Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some centres during the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), attributing the disruption to a combination of logistical, operational and security-related challenges.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Public Affairs Department, the examination body said it launched an immediate investigation after receiving reports of delays from various centres across the country.

According to WAEC, one of the major causes of the disruption was a fatal motor accident that occurred on June 3, 2026, involving personnel responsible for transporting sensitive examination materials between states.

The council disclosed that the accident claimed the lives of three staff members, significantly affecting its distribution schedule and contributing to the delayed commencement of examinations in some locations.

WAEC described the incident as a tragic loss and said emergency contingency measures were swiftly activated to ensure that examinations could still be conducted in affected areas despite the setback.

The council also pointed to administrative challenges surrounding the finalisation of examination arrangements and the late registration of some candidates, which it said affected the timely preparation and deployment of examination materials.

In addition, WAEC noted that security concerns in certain areas further complicated logistics. It stated that protests linked to the abduction of schoolchildren disrupted transportation routes and hindered the prompt distribution of examination materials despite efforts by officials to maintain the examination timetable.

The examination body, however, assured candidates, parents and other stakeholders that corrective measures have been implemented to guarantee the smooth conduct of the remaining papers.

WAEC said evidence from examinations conducted on June 5 indicated that the interventions were already yielding positive results, with activities proceeding without major disruptions.

The council expressed appreciation to the Federal and State Ministries of Education, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their support throughout the examination period.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the credibility and integrity of public examinations, WAEC pledged to continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free conclusion of the 2026 WASSCE.

The statement was signed by Moyosola F. Adesina, Head of Public Affairs, on behalf of the Head of the National Office, WAEC.
