The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria's Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, national unity, and the rule of law.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria's history, serving as a reminder of the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the country's democratic journey. The government noted that the contributions of these patriots continue to shape the nation's values and strengthen democratic institutions.

The Minister reiterated the Federal Government's unwavering commitment to preserving democratic ideals, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He stated that the current administration remains dedicated to upholding these principles in the interest of national development and good governance.

Tunji-Ojo also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, working closely with security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures across the country to protect lives and property. He stressed that a peaceful and secure environment is essential for sustaining democracy and fostering economic and social progress.

Calling on citizens to use the Democracy Day holiday as a period of reflection, the Minister urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to lawful conduct, responsible civic engagement, and national unity.

"As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens," he said.

The Federal Government further encouraged Nigerians to celebrate the occasion peacefully while reflecting on the nation's democratic achievements and collective responsibility towards building a stronger and more prosperous country.

The statement was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, and dated June 11, 2026.
