FG Unveils FreeTV to End Pay-TV Subscription Costs for Nigerians
By Abdulahi Musa
The Federal Government has announced the launch of a new free-to-air television platform known as FreeTV, aimed at eliminating subscription fees for millions of Nigerian television viewers.
According to the government, the initiative is part of the country’s long-delayed Digital Switchover (DSO) programme, designed to modernize Nigeria’s broadcasting system and expand access to quality television content nationwide.
The FreeTV platform will offer more than 100 channels, covering news, sports, entertainment, education, and children’s programming. The channels are expected to include both local and international content, delivered in multiple Nigerian languages.
Officials explained that the service will operate on a hybrid model combining satellite and internet technology, allowing viewers to access content without paying monthly subscription fees typically charged by pay-TV providers.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) stated that the platform is part of efforts to improve access to information, promote local content creation, and make television more affordable for households across the country.
The government added that the rollout will be gradual, with infrastructure and coverage expected to expand nationwide over time, ensuring that more Nigerians can benefit from the free television service.
The FreeTV initiative is being positioned as a major shift in Nigeria’s broadcasting industry, potentially reducing the financial burden of pay-TV subscriptions while increasing access to diverse programming.
