FG Won’t Surrender to Terrorists, Bandits — Tinubu Assures Nigerians
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration remains resolute in tackling insecurity, easing economic hardship and securing the release of citizens held captive by terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements across the country.
The assurance was conveyed on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Akume declared that the Federal Government would never bow to terror or criminal intimidation, stressing that national security remains a top priority.
"The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation," he stated.
The SGF acknowledged the economic difficulties, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement affecting many Nigerians, assuring citizens that the government is aware of their plight and is intensifying efforts to provide lasting solutions.
He noted that President Tinubu is committed to substantially reducing socio-economic challenges through sustainable democratic dividends while strengthening security institutions to protect lives and property.
Akume also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of Nigeria's 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999.
With political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gathering momentum, he urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate campaigns and divisive rhetoric, warning that democracy must not become a battleground for political interests.
He particularly advised young Nigerians against participating in thuggery, misinformation, ethnic hostility and religious intolerance, urging them to safeguard their future and uphold democratic values.
The SGF further called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, the media and families to promote peace, tolerance and national unity as the country prepares for another election cycle.
He commended members of the Armed Forces and security agencies for their sacrifices in defending the nation and urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of June 12 heroes by working towards a peaceful, secure and prosperous Nigeria.
