FIFA Demands Payment After Website Glitch Hands Fans Free World Cup Tickets

World football governing body, FIFA, has asked dozens of fans who inadvertently received free tickets for the 2026 World Cup to pay the correct amount within seven days or risk losing their seats.
The controversy arose after a technical glitch on FIFA’s ticketing platform allowed some supporters to complete purchases without being charged during checkout. FIFA confirmed that approximately 60 fans were affected by the error, which resulted in tickets being allocated at “0 USD.”
In a statement, FIFA acknowledged the mistake and expressed regret over the inconvenience caused. However, the organization insisted that the tickets were issued due to a payment processing error and that affected fans must now complete payment to retain their reservations.
According to reports, the affected tickets were linked to group-stage matches in Toronto. Fans received emails informing them that while their seats remain reserved, they must pay the full ticket price within a week or face cancellation of their bookings.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions among football supporters. While some argued that FIFA should honour the transactions since the error originated from its system, others maintained that correcting an obvious pricing mistake is standard practice. Online discussions have also highlighted frustrations over the high cost of World Cup tickets and FIFA’s ticketing policies.
The development comes amid growing scrutiny of FIFA’s ticketing operations. Authorities in New York and New Jersey are already investigating aspects of World Cup ticket sales, including pricing practices and consumer protection concerns.
