The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two senior officials and the President of its Students’ Union Government (SUG) over allegations of extortion involving students.
According to reports, the university’s management took the decision after receiving a petition and setting up a preliminary fact-finding committee to investigate claims of financial misconduct linked to 100-level students.
The suspended individuals are Mr. Olanrewaju Patrick Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Dr. Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services; and the SUG President, Mr. James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
Investigations reportedly showed that the officials were involved in the unauthorized collection of ₦1,000 from each 100-level student for practical sessions, without approval from the university’s Senate, management, or bursary department.
The committee also alleged that the Director authorized the levy, while the Deputy Dean assisted in the collection. The SUG President was further accused of receiving part of the funds and allegedly handling transactions linked to the money collected.
The report indicated that about ₦2.5 million was involved in the scheme, with conflicting claims over how the money was shared and remitted among those implicated.
FUOYE management said the suspension aligns with its regulations, stressing that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for extortion, corruption, and abuse of office. The university added that the affected individuals will remain suspended pending the outcome of full disciplinary investigations.
The institution urged students and staff to remain calm as the disciplinary process continues.
